By Friday night (8 July 05), strong winds and heavy sideways rain pounded
the Keys for more than 24 hours, flooding roads, downing power lines and
pushing trees over onto homes and cars, even though the eye of Dennis
passed about 75 miles west of Key West. Sustained winds of 62 mph
were being recorded throughout Saturday morning (9 July), with gusts
of up to 74 mph recorded. Flooding was a big concern as the Atlantic
rose an estimated three feet, washing over sea walls all around Key West
and overwhelming drain grates, which were clogged with debris.
Massive waves dumped stacks of seaweed about 2 feet high onto roads.
A 40-foot sailboat in the Keys had broken loose from its anchor and slammed
into a small dock, opening it up and sinking it.
On Friday night and Saturday morning in Ft Lauderdale, some of the outer
bands of weather created winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts of wind estimated
at up to 80 mph. To the right is a radar view of Hurricane Dennis on the
morning of 9 July 05.
Due to the rare and unusual cancellation of treks, Sea Base, as they have in the past for other hurricanes that let to cancellations, commissioned a special patch for affected participants. These patches were awarded at our Sept 05 Court of Honor.
From December 27, 2011 to January 3, 2012, 13 scouts and 5 adults went to Florida Sea Base for a Sea Explorer cruise. Most of the other T2 trips have been Coral Reef Trips with a maximum crew of 8. For the Sea Explorer Cruise we can have a crew of up to 20. For this trip our boat was the Calypso Gypsy, a 100 foot gaff-rigged top sail schooner based out of Key Largo, about 20 miles north of BSA Seabase in Islamorada. Her draft is too deep for the BSA harbor so we had to depart from Key Largo. The Calypso Gypsy is captained by Captain Lance and Captain Jim.
